College: Financial Aid
The Best Way to Save for College: A Complete Guide to 529 Plans, 2002/2003 ASIN: 0967032261
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Comprehensive and reader-friendly guide to 529 plans Comments: Saving for their children's higher education is a daunting task for most American families. State-sponsored savings programs referred to as "529 plans" provide Federal (and often State) tax advantages to many savers, but parents need to evaluate all the options. Furthermore, a burgeoning array of 529 plans makes the decision of how to save for college more confusing than ever. Enter author Joseph Hurley, who presents all the key issues in deciding whether and how to choose a 529 account in a straightforward, reasonably easy-to-read style. He lets you know what questions to ask, and then provides the answers when possible. The first section of the book provides an explanation of 529 plans, including their history and benefits; an overview of how they work and what to look for in a 529 plan; comparison with other means of saving for higher education; and income tax, financial aid, and estate planning issues. The second section of the book provides a description of each state's plans, using a common format that answers the most basic of his "what to look for in a 529 plan" checklist. Contacts to get further information from each state are also included.Much of this information is available on the author's excellent "saving for college" web site. This book will be most helpful to you if you want to learn a lot about 529 plans without scrolling through screen after screen of information (i.e., if you'd rather curl up with a book than stare at a screen). For looking up specific bits of information, the web site may be all you need.

How to Go to College Almost for Free ASIN: 0060937653
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: too much fat Comments: This book has some good information but you have to wade through the fat to get at it. It may be written mainly for aspiring college students, but I feel it is not complete enough or deep enough for parents. There are many other better books out there on the subject (notably Fiancial Aid for Dummies and Discounts and Deals at the Nations best 360 colleges).

Get Free Cash for College ASIN: 0965755649
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Excellent Book -- I'm Using It Right Now! Comments: I have both Get Into Any College and Get Free Cash For College and I also heard Gen and Kelly speak at my school last month. I highly recommend both books. I used their admissions book to finish my applications and I have just started using the scholarship book to find awards and apply. The advice is clear and easy to follow. I like the fact that there are a lot of examples of applications and essays. The scholarship book also has lots (more than I can apply to) awards and many chapters on how to write a strong scholarship application.Overall, I am very happy with both books and recommend them to any senior who is going to college or needs scholarship money.

Conquer the Cost of College: The Family Guide to Paying for College (Conquer the Cost of College) ASIN: 0743222601
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A satisfied customer... Comments: Finally, a financial aid resource we can use! We've bought several financial aid guides recently in anticipation of our childrens' upcoming collegiate years. All have been either VERY confusing or too light to be of any real use. In "Conquer the Cost of College", the author presents a clear and concise plan to get the most aid for your college bound child. No gimmicks here, just great information, organized in easy to follow steps. If you have a high school student headed for college and are looking to save money, this is THE guide to use...Thanks!

College Planning for Dummies (2nd Ed) ASIN: 0764550489
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A Well Rounded and Informative Book Comments: I found the book to be very informative. It covers everything from what courses admission officers' like to see on transcripts, to tips on how to save money for college without having it deducted from, if your applying for it, financial aid. The book doesn't contain anything about specific schools (like admissions, GPAs, etc..), it is more of a overview on things like deciding location, size, and other factors involved in choosing a college. One thing I found really interesting was that the book gave all sorts of hints, tips, and facts on colleges. It also proved and disproved many myths surrounding college entrance.Overall, being a highschool sophomore, I found it well worth the price. This book takes you from beginning to end on the ABCs of college and gives steps on how to prepare no matter what age or level you're at. It really helped me, and I would highly reccomend it to anyone who is planning to go to college and doesn't know where to start.

Discounts and Deals at the Nation's 360 Best Colleges : The Parent Soup Financial Aid and College Guide ASIN: 1582380309
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Adequate information for anxious college hopefuls Comments: Overall the book was comprehensive enough in the sense that it covered about 360 summaries on individual colleges and the types of unique financial aid that they offer. It also acts somewhat in part as a college guide because the author separates the colleges according to the most competitve, the highly competitive, and the competitive ones while also listing their individual acceptance rates. There is also significant info on FAFSA and PROFILE forms and a history on the federal government's policy on giving financial aid. The only thing that I warn potential readers is that the deadlines listed regarding the colleges are dreadfully outdated in many of the universities included here. Also, it would've been helpful if he had included the average financial aid package per college or the address of the college just for reference. This is a pretty sufficient book though for those who want to get the whole scheme of things and a little bit more, and for those who want to get a head start on the financial aid game. When I applied for financial aid to my colleges, I always had this book handy - so the money spent in buying this was overall not wasted.

Best Buys in College Education ASIN: 0764120182
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Best college guide I have used Comments: I am surprised there are no other reviews for this book. My daughter is a senior and we have been using this book for over a year now. All but one of the colleges she has looked at is in the book. Its best feature? It describes colleges that cost a little less than the biggies - most in the range of 20-25 k including room/board. That is very important for me since we have three kids to send to college. I don't expect much financial aid so we will be on our own except for some merit money. My daughter wants a small school, not in the city. She does very well in school but is not very competitive. So this range of colleges is perfect for her. I recommend it even if you are looking at some of the more prestigious schools (some of those are in here too). The other great thing is that the description of each college is very lengthy, some are 4 pages long.
